Influence: Arguably, the defining characteristic of a leader is that people want to follow them. This is best accomplished by such acts as empowering others to achieve their goals, finding solutions and then mapping out the steps toward accomplishing them, and mentoring.
Understanding: Human beings are unique and complex, and to work with them well a decision maker must understand this and relate to everyone as individuals. Rather than a cookie-cutter approach to management, they stick to their principles but remain open in how best to apply them.
There are many different leadership styles, but they will all rely on these traits to some degree.
